On-Premises, Cloud, and Hybrid

The First Real-Time, Unified Business Technology Platform

What Architecture is Best for You?

Cloud-based infrastructure and remote working are becoming increasingly common, driving many organizations to migrate from traditional, physical (on-premises) systems. Key contributing factors include the increased flexibility and scalability that cloud and hybrid infrastructures can provide.

INSTANT® provides the ability to integrate many complex silos of information within your enterprise, enabling you to obtain important information and act on business decisions – worldwide.

Cloud vs. On-Premises (“On-Prem”)

It’s important to start by clarifying exactly what cloud versus on-prem computing means because key features of cloud and on-prem determine which might be most appropriate in specific situations. In addition, it’s also worth considering the characteristics of a private cloud versus a public cloud.

What is On-Prem?

On-premises, or “on-prem,” refers to an architecture where hardware is located in a specific physical location, such as servers within a customer’s offices or data center – i.e., literally on that customer’s premises. In this case, each server ¬– and often each end-user – needs a separate license to use the software. Each organization is responsible for ensuring that every user has the appropriate licenses and that all software is kept secure and up-to-date.

With this scenario, your organization needs a knowledgeable, in-house IT team to support and maintain your architecture. This also requires continued investments – not only in hardware but also in your IT team – as your organization scales and changes.

What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing refers to a system design in which an organization is connected to servers that are located in a secure area of the internet. In cloud-based systems, companies store and access programs, applications, and data online.

Cloud infrastructure is an attractive prospect for many organizations, primarily due to its flexibility and scalability. In essence, it enables you to “pay as you go” for technology resources because you incur only the costs for the computing power (and storage capacity) that you need at any given time.

This configuration shifts the financial nature of technology resources/expenses from “CapEx” to “OpEx”. In other words, you are essentially “renting” technology capacity and services from third-party providers. In addition, this structure shifts most of the technology and maintenance burdens/risks to third-party providers. The increased flexibility, scalability, and capital efficiency inherent in this model are key reasons why so many companies are shifting to cloud computing.

What is Hybrid Infrastructure?

In a hybrid model, some technology components of an overall system (e.g., hardware, software, networks) are shared across multiple organizations, while others are dedicated to specific users/clients. Once this structure is configured properly, users can only access specific parts of these hybrid systems – as necessary and as allowed – based on pre-defined rules/logic for safety.

The “Best of Both Worlds”

While a hybrid system, therefore, appears very compelling, it’s important to note that hybrid structures can also include the drawbacks of each model. As a result, when considering different system designs, knowing exactly which features and characteristics are most important for your organization is essential. In addition, it’s imperative to perform a rigorous cost/benefit analysis that incorporates all of the “hard” and “soft” benefits – and costs (including risks) – associated with each of these options.
